LOST IN THE JUNGLE
-THE MEMORY THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET-
It was a mundane mood after the school final examination and I had enough of reading books. My friends and I decided to go camping at Mount Tahan. After getting the green light from our parents, we equipped ourselves with enough food to last us the two-day journey. After making sure we had everything ready, we embarked on our journey to Mount Tahan.
As we ascended the mountain, the steep slopes sapped us of our energy. About an hour later, we found a waterfall. The view was splendid. We decided to stay there as dusk came. At nightfall, we managed to make a campfire. For a few minutes, we just sat there in silence. I looked up and the view that greeted me was absolutely magnificent. The stars hung brightly in the dark sky. The each of us took time to tell our own scary tales before Adi, the live wire of our group, played us a wide repertoire of songs ranging from classical music to the latest hits. We were all over the moon.
As it was a feverish cold night, we snuggled close to each other. It was only two hours later that we fell into a deep slumber. The next morning, we went deeper into the jungle. A few hours after that, we decided to return as our stomachs were grumbling, asking to be filled. We tried retracing our steps back but it was to no avail. We were just making huge circles in the jungle. After an hour of walking but reaching nowhere, we gave up. Our energy was drained and we had no food. I could not believe that we were lost!
We were at our wits' end. With no other options, we had to bivouac our second night by a river. The eerie silence surrounded us. Fear was written all over our faces. I could not help wishing that I was in the comfort of my blanket at that time. It was a hopeless thought as all my camping needs were left behind.
Hours dragged past. The cacophonous sounds made by the nocturnal creatures only intensified our misery. When daylight came, a fresh glimmer of hope showered us. With renewed psyche and fervour, we tried to find our way back.
After an hour of searching, luck was on our side. We found a group of campers who were getting ready to go home. We made our way towards them with wide smiles plastered on our faces. We told them about what had happened.
"Relax, boys! It's time to go home!" said one of them who later invited us to go home with them.
After they finished packing, we made our journey down the mountain and reached the foot of Mount Tahan. We thanked them for their help and dashed to the nearest bus stop.
Up until today, the memory of us being lost in the jungle while climbing Mount Tahan is still fresh in my mind. I will never forget every single moment I spent with my friends there.
